It's an ARTsplosion
Photo from the Museum and Historical Society facebook page.
This week saw some massive waves in the Barbados art world.
Museum staff, including Director Alissandra Cummins, met with an audience at Colleton Great House to make one message clear: the Museum’s intent to purchase and preserve the African and Oceanic artwork of The Frank Rickwood Collection.
This extraordinary collection features wood sculptures and wall pieces that loom taller than actual people, and offer deep insight into the cultural diversity present in Oceanic and African art. It’s safe to say there is nothing like it in the region, and it’s a major win for Barbadians to have access to such a unique collection. Go check it out!
The contemporary art scene came alive with a curation from internationally acclaimed Bajan artist Sheena Rose, featuring the work of Simone Asia, Adrian Richards, Alanis Forde, Ronald Williams and more. It’s nuff young people thinking critically about their artwork! Titled “Contemporary Art/Contemporary Issues” this exhibition asks its artists to focus on a simple algorithm: space + pressure = conflict. Sneak peak: it includes intense performance works by Matthew Murrell and Adam Patterson! Get in there because it closes Sunday, February 4th.
Hip, Hip, Hurrah
